Abstract: |
The book is based in research that includes survey information and numerous case studies from a variety of correctional facilities. Information is provided on the frequency of inmate sexual contact, drug use, needle sharing, tattooing, and the lack of access to condoms among inmates. Given the disproportionately high incarceration rate of ethnic minorities, the book provides strategies for the development of culturally sensitive HIV/AIDS prevention programs in correctional settings. The book also documents differences in the patterns of HIV/AIDS cases among adult and juvenile and male and female inmates and explores policies and programs relevant to these populations, including education and prevention, testing and disclosure, partner notification, and housing. The book offers a global perspective by including a synopsis of HIV/AIDS programs and practices in foreign correctional institutions. 240 references and a subject index |
