Annotation: This article describes a survey to help police chiefs assess and monitor perceived sexual harassment in their departments.
Abstract: The article describes the design of a survey to elicit police officers’ views on sexual harassment in their department and how to analyze and report results. Department sexual harassment policies must include: (1) the legal definition of sexual harassment; (2) a strong statement of employer disapproval and assurance that the employer takes the issue very seriously, considering it a productivity issue; (3) an exact description of prohibited behaviors; (4) steps the target of harassment should take; (5) the names and telephone numbers of people to contact regarding complaints; (6) how the complaint will be handled; and (7) what disciplinary action the organization will take when sexual harassment has been established. Police departments can control harassment and prevent liability by adopting and distributing a policy that clearly prohibits harassment or other discrimination in the workplace; informing supervisors and employees about the policy; instructing supervisors on their responsibilities under the policy; and describing and implementing a disciplinary process.
