Annotation: This CD-ROM presents the topics discussed at the Second Annual DNA Grantees’ Workshop held in Washington, DC, June 6-8, 2001.
Abstract: The first topic was Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Technology, which focused on the development of rapid immobilized probe assay for detection of mtDNA sequence variation, the benefits of increasing discrimination of mtDNA, and the National mtDNA Database with 5,000 new sequences. The second topic was High Speed Automation with emphasis on Nanogen DNA Chip System and Application, a microdevice for automated ultra-high speed and portable DNA diagnostics, and automated STR analysis for DNA databases. Non-Human DNA was the next topic, specifically diagnostic tests for forensic entomologists and development of forensic typing in the domestic cat. The Approaches to Chromosome Analyses was a topic that included discussion on multiplex SNP assays for mtDNA and Y chromosome markers, development of Human Y chromosome as a forensic tool, and locus specific brackets in Y STR Genotyping. The next topic was Approaches to Differential Lysis, including sperm cell selection system, optimization of spermatozoa capture for sexual assault evidence, and typing of sexual assault evidence with the potential for automation. The discussion on Forensics Markers and Methods centered on the identification and analysis of polymorphic alu repeats, LINE elements as a new source of genomic variation for DNA profiling, and validation of CODIS. The final topic was Analytical Tools to Enhance Current Methods, such as the development of new analytical buffer systems for capillary electrophoresis of forensic DNA, short tandem repeat analysis using high performance liquid chromatography, and microplate assay for quantitation of human DNA. There was a roundtable discussion on such topics as the impact of NIJ funding and DNA research and development. There was a National DNA Database Update, focusing on topics including the National DNA Index System and the Human Identity Trade Association. Finally, a legislative report presented details of possible financial support from the Federal Government for crime laboratories.
