Annotation: This document provides statistical information from the Nebraska Correctional Services for Fiscal Year 2001.
Abstract: The total amount of expenditures for Nebraska correctional services’ programs was $122,437,741.63. The incarceration rate per 100,000 as of January 1, 2002, was 206 for Nebraska as compared to 476 for the Nation. The number decreased from 1999 (212). The recidivism rate was 18.8 percent. Last year the recidivism rate was 23.3 percent, the highest since 1996. The inmate population as a percent of design capacity was 163.43 percent, the highest in a 10 year period. The actual inmate population was 3,875 on June 26, 2001. The total admissions for 2001 were 2,291. The total releases were 2,003. The total population by gender showed 3,588 males and 312 females. First-time offenders were 59.8 percent of the population. There were 2,293 White inmates, 987 Black inmates, and 405 Hispanic inmates. The majority of inmates were in the 25 to 29 year age range. The majority of inmates were incarcerated for drug offenses, sex offenses, assault, and burglary. Most inmates had a minimum sentence of 1 to 2 years. Most inmates had a maximum sentence of over 20 years. The parole population consisted of mostly first-time offenders, male, and White inmates. Most of the parole population was over 50 years old.
