This report presents data on criminal cases disposed by the New
South Wales (Australia) local, district, supreme, and children's
courts in 2002.
Abstract:
For local courts, data address the number of persons charged and
the number of charges for each type of offense; the outcome of
charges; the outcome of an appearance (separate data for
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons); the outcome of
appearances according to legal representation; the outcome of an
appearance according to bail status; type of principal offense
and penalty for convictions; type of drug and penalty for
principal offense in drug cases; type of principal offense and
penalty for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons; and
average penalty by type of principal offense. Other data on local court cases pertain to average age of persons convicted, case delay, violence orders granted, place of residence for charged persons, and licensing cases. Data for children's courts address number of persons charged by principal offense, bail status by
sex, convictions by type of principal offense and penalty, and
prior proven offense outcomes since 1995. Data on district courts
and the Supreme Court are presented separately but in the same
tables for "higher courts." Data pertain to the number of trial
and sentence cases registered and finalized; cases finalized and
persons charged by jurisdiction, year of committal, and type of
committal; persons charged and charges by type of offense and
number of offenses charged; charge outcome; convictions by type
of principal offense and penalty; convictions by type of offense,
sex, and age; appeals against conviction; and appeals against
sentences. Extensive tables and appended notes on penalties,
penalty hierarchy for principal offense, and district courts in
registry regions
