Abstract: |
This issue of the In Session newsletter of the National Youth Court Center (NYCC) begins by presenting evaluation findings from a study of teen courts or youth courts in four jurisdictions conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). The findings suggest that teen courts may be a positive alternative to the normal juvenile justice process, especially in jurisdictions that do not have a wide variety of intervention options for young, first-time juvenile offenders. Information is provided on video and online training for youth court volunteers, as well as the Youth Court Training Package developed by the American Bar Association to assist youth court programs in training volunteers. A summary is presented on the successful outcome of the National Youth Court Conference, “America’s Youth Justice System,” held in 2002 in Virginia. The newsletter concludes with updates on youth court award recipients and youth court initiatives and program development. |
