Title: RISS Overview of the Regional Information Sharing Systems, CD
Date Published: June 2005
Annotation: This CD presents an overview of the Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS).
Abstract: RISS supports law enforcement with criminal intelligence information sharing which enhances the ability to identify, target, and prevent criminal activities. RISS is a national information sharing system that includes 6 regional centers spanning all 50 States, the District of Columbia, the U.S. territories, Canada, England, and Australia. RISS provides many services to officers and agencies through its secure Web-based law enforcement network known as RISSNET. RISSNET provides the technical and communications backbone for the rapid sharing of criminal justice information by offering controlled access to criminal justice information through a variety of avenues. For example, RISSIntel allows RISS members to query one or all of the linked criminal intelligence databases while RISSLinks provides link charts illustrating the associations between suspects, weapons, and other information. The RISS Investigative Leads Bulletin Board, or RISSLeads, provides a forum for RISS members to post messages about criminal investigations while RISSLive facilitates real-time communications, such as real-time communications for operational events. In addition to all these functions, each RISS center provides publications and a host of analytic services that include charting, trend and pattern analysis, telephone toll analysis, document sorts, organized crime link analysis, computer forensic services, and video analysis. Specialized investigative equipment, such as cameras and night-vision equipment are available for loan and confidential funds can be secured to support investigations. Regional conferences are sponsored by RISS to develop expertise and foster interagency information sharing. Contact information is presented for the RISS regional centers.
