Annotation: This report presents the most recent data available on school crime and student safety and covers the topics of victimization, fights, bullying, classroom disorder, weapons, student perceptions of school safety, teacher injury and availability and student use of drugs and alcohol.
Abstract: Highlights of key findings for 2005-2006 include: (1) an estimated 54.8 million students were enrolled in pre-kindergarten through grade 12; (2) among youth ages 5-18, there were 17 school-associated violent deaths; (3) in 2005, among students ages 12-18, there were about 1.5 million victims of nonfatal crimes at school; (4) victimization rate of students ages 12-18 at school declined between 1992 and 2005; (5) 86 percent of public schools reported that at least one violent crime, theft, or other crime occurred at their school; (6) 8 percent of students in grades 9-12 reported being threatened or injured with a weapon in the previous 12 months, and 25 percent reported that drugs were made available to them on school property in 2005; and (7) 28 percent of students ages 12-18 reported having been bullied at school during the previous 6 months in 2005. This report, produced by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics was designed to provide a brief summary of information from an array of data sources and to make data on national school crime and safety accessible to policymakers, educators, parents, and the general public. Organized into sections, the sections cover violent deaths, nonfatal student and teacher victimization, school environment, fights, weapons and illegal substances, fear and avoidance, and discipline, safety, and security measures. Each section contains a set of indicators that, taken together, aim to describe a distinct aspect of school crime and safety. Tables, figures, and glossary
