Abstract: Twenty-six tables provide national data on drug use. Data are provided on such measures as the estimated number of users of selected illegal drugs for 1979-2006; illicit drug use by current employment status; trends in 30-day prevalence of selected drugs among 8th-graders, 10th-graders, and 12th-graders; the use of selected drugs by sex, race/ethnicity, and grade; and number of past-year drug initiates among persons ages 12 or older for 2002-2006. Sixteen tables address drug-use consequences. The consequences measured include direct and indirect costs to society of drug abuse for 1992-2002; number of deaths from drug-induced causes by sex and race for 1979-2005; trends in drug-related emergency room episodes for 1988-2005; estimated arrests and drug arrests for 1989-2006; and summary of the monetary value of saving a high-risk youth from drug abuse. Four tables pertain to drug treatment. These data address a 1-day census of clients in treatment by facility ownership for 1980-2006 and of clients in alcohol and/or drug abuse treatment by type of care and age group for 1987-2006. Two tables report on the estimated number and percentage of persons age 12 or older who needed and received treatment for an illicit drug problem in the past year by demographic characteristics for 2002-2006. Eleven tables report on drug-user expenditures and availability; 18 tables report on State data on drug use and drug law enforcement data; 18 tables cover local data on drug use, arrestees, and drug-related emergency-department episodes; and 12 tables report on the international production and control of illegal drugs.
