Annotation: This report presents activities of the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct in its review of complaints of misconduct against judges of the State Unified Court System for the year 2006.
Abstract: Highlights of actions taken by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct for the year 2006 include: (1) 1,500 new complaints were received by the Commission; (2) in 267 matters, the Commission authorized full investigations; (3) a total of 463 investigations were disposed of by the Commission; and (4) 25 matters involving 15 different judges were pending formal written complaints. Highlights of formal proceedings or determinations by the Commission include: (1) 9 formal disciplinary determinations were rendered; (2) the Commission completed 5 formal proceedings resulting in public censure; (3) 5 other proceedings resulted in a public disposition; and (4) 14 judges resigned while complaints were pending. In addition, the Commission issued 48 Letters of Dismissal and Caution and 2 letters of Caution. The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct is the independent agency designated by the State Constitution to review complaints of misconduct against judges of the State Unified Court System, which includes approximately 3,400 judges and justices.
