Annotation: This article examines how to foster professional growth within the current employee pool.
Abstract: There are elements, both internal and external, that are necessary to find rising stars in an organization. The internal elements are those characteristics found within an employee that signify potential to grow within the agency, while external elements are the processes put in place by leaders to help employees grow professionally. It is the combination of the two that provide a solid foundation for growth, both for the employees and also the agency leaders who require continued progress within the agency. Leaders must know three things: where they are going, the direction of the department they are responsible for, and who is going to help them get there. That is why preparing employees to rise in the ranks is so vital. The same is true for the employee seeking professional growth. Having the personal desire, the motivation, and the willingness to embrace change can only get an employee so far. For true growth, an employee also must know where he or she is heading. Leaders must have frequent discussions with their employees about their careers in order to meet the needs of both the agency and the employees. Other areas discussed in this article include: diversity in the work force, mentorship programs, and leadership development training for employees. 1 table and 1 endnote
