Annotation: This study reviewed the literature on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) youth violence and delinquency published from 2001 to 2008.
Abstract: Findings demonstrate the frequency of AAPI youth violence and delinquency, provide a sense of the involvement of these youth in the juvenile justice system, reveal ethnic group differences in violence and delinquency, and explore the effects of immigration and acculturation on these phenomena. This article summarizes research findings from 2001 to 2008, thereby updating review of work published between 1970 and 2000. A search for relevant journal articles, books, book chapters, and reports was conducted in psychology and interdisciplinary social science databases as well as public access Web sites. Search criteria comprised combinations of key words: Asian American, Pacific Islander, delinquency, gangs, youth violence, and prevention. The search was limited to literature published between 2001 and 2008, that analyzed empirical data on youth violence, delinquency, gangs as an outcome among U.S. samples, or that reviewed prevention programs and strategies. The literature search found 30 journal articles, 8 books and book chapters, and 8 reports. The review of literature begins with a definition of key terms. Next, AAPI youth violence and delinquency trends and patterns are discussed using institutional data and psychosocial research. Recommendations for future research are made, followed by a review of prevention programs. This article concludes with a call for a national agenda for addressing AAPI youth violence and delinquency that relies on collaborations among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
