Annotation: This guide book has been designed to help mentoring programs create a resource development plan.
Abstract: The goal of this guide book is to aid the user in the development of a stable and sustainable mentoring program that will allow young people in each community to thrive through the support and friendship of a caring mentor. The first two sections describe a typical resource planning cycle. These sections describe how to get organized for assessing where you are; assessing where you want to be; and creating a plan and process to get from where you are to where you want to be. These sections are supported by planning worksheets and other useful tools which can be found in appendix C. The next sections describe the primary funding streams that are typically part of a youth mentoring program’s resource development plan. Chapters in this section address the details of seeking support, such as: direct support from corporations and businesses; foundations; government sources; individual giving; and event and other local support. While these chapters present each strategy as an individual approach, the assumption is that programs will integrate multiple strategies to create a diversified resource base. Finding the right balance of sources is the key to success for most mentoring programs. The appendices of the guidebook cover additional topics and provide tools that can help with planning efforts, such as: involving your board in resource development; ethical considerations in resource development; planning tools and worksheets; and other available books and planning tools.
