Annotation: This article reviews the literature on the extent and nature of violence perpetrated by women in intimate relationships, and reports on an evaluation of “Responsible Choices for Women,” a group developed for women who have abused intimate partners.
Abstract: Data from a total of 154 women found significant improvements on almost all outcome measures. Women’s status as mandated or non-mandated did not affect treatment outcomes, despite the fact that the non-mandated women reported more scores in the clinical range at pretest. The clinical implications of these results are described. Since 1995, the Calgary Counseling Center has offered a group treatment program for women who behave abusively to intimate partners or children. This article describes the group format, the demographic characteristics of the 293 women who began the Responsible Choices for Women program based on whether they were mandated to treatment versus those who dropped out.
