Abstract: TWENTY-ONE PROJECTS USING THE PATROL TACTICS OF CIVILIAN DRESS, MECHANICAL DEVICES, AND/OR UNIFORMED TACTICAL UNITS ARE CLASSIFIED INTO PROJECT FAMILIES (LOW VISIBILITY, HIGH VISIBILITY, AND COMBINED LOW/HIGH VISIBILITY PATROLS). POINTS OR VARIABLES THAT HAVE BEEN AND SHOULD BE MEASURED IN EVALUATIONS OF SPECIALIZED PATROLS ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED. IN ADDITION, MEASURES WHICH COULD BE USED MORE EFFECTIVELY TO EVALUATE SPECIALIZED PATROLS ARE IDENTIFIED AND DESCRIBED. FOR THE OTHER FIVE PARTS OF THIS SIX-PART REPORT, INCLUDING A LITERATURE SEARCH, SELECTED PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS, AN ASSESSMENT OF THE KNOWLEDGE ON SPECIALIZED PATROL, STUDY DESIGNS FOR EVALUATIONS OF SPECIALIZED PATROL, AND A 66-PAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY, SEE NCJ-30380, 30381, AND 30383 THROUGH NCJ-30385.
