Annotation: EIGHT ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES ARE COMPARED: SOLVENT TESTS, EMISSION SPECTROGRAPHY, INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY, PYROLYSIS, GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY, PYROLYSIS INFRARED, FATTY ACID METHYL ESTERS, LASER SPARK EMISSION, AND X-RAY DIFFRACTION.
Abstract: THIRTY-ONE HOUSEHOLD GLOSS PAINTS WERE USED FOR THE ANALYSES - ELEVEN WHITE, TEN RED, AND TEN GREEN. STUDY RESULTS SHOWED LITTLE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TECHNIQUES, ALLOWING THEM TO BE USED EFFECTIVELY IN ANY COMBINATION. ALSO INDICATED WAS THE POSSIBILITY OF DETERMINING A SEQUENCE OF TESTS LEADING MOST RAPIDLY TO THE MAXIMUM DISCRIMINATION, ALTHOUGH DEPENDENT ON COLOR. FOR THE WHITE PAINTS THE SEQUENCE IS PYROLYSIS GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY, LASER SPARK EMISSION/OR ARC EMISSION, PYROLYSIS INFRARED; FOR THE RED PAINTS, LASER SPARK EMISSION/OR X-RAY, ARC EMISSION, AND PYROLYSIS GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY; AND FOR THE GREEN PAINTS, LASER SPARK EMISSION/OR X-RAY AND INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY.
