Language: Danish
Country: Denmark
Annotation: THE STUDY COVERED 311 INMATES OF KRAGSKOVHEDE PRISON WHO WERE RELEASED, EITHER UNCONDITIONALLY OR ON PAROLE, OR TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER PRISON DURING THE FIRST HALF OF 1972.
Abstract: STATISTICS ARE PROVIDED ON THE NUMBER OF ESCAPES (39), THE NUMBER OF AUTHORIZED ABSENCES (504) AND THE NUMBER OF FURLOUGHS (445). THE STATISTICS ARE BROKEN DOWN TO SHOW THE REASONS FOR WHICH ABSENCES AND FURLOUGHS WERE GRANTED. STATISTICS ARE ALSO PROVIDED ON THE CRIMES COMMITTED WHILE ABSENT, BROKEN DOWN ACCORDING TO TYPE OF CRIME. IN ALL, 19 (6.1 PERCENT) COMMITTED NEW CRIMES AFTER ESCAPING, 6 (1.9 PERCENT) AFTER FAILING TO RETURN FROM FURLOUGH, 3 (1.0 PERCENT) WHILE ON FURLOUGH, 1 (0.3 PERCENT) AFTER ESCAPING AND WHILE ON FURLOUGH, AND 1 (0.3 PERCENT) BOTH WHILE ON FURLOUGH AND AFTER FAILING TO RETURN FROM FURLOUGH. IT APPEARS THAT THE ASSUMPTION THAT MANY INMATES ON FURLOUGH COMMIT CRIMES IS MISTAKEN. THUS, OF THE 225 INMATES WHO WERE ABSENT ON FURLOUGH OVERNIGHT, NO MORE THAN 1.8 PERCENT COMMITTED NEW CRIMES. --IN DANISH
