Annotation: BASED ON FIELD RESEARCH ON DRUG TRAFFICKERS IN THE OTTAWA AREA, THIS PAPER PROVIDES A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE PATTERNS OF USE OF HASHISH AND THE NORMS AND PROCEDURES OF TRAFFICKING IN THAT DRUG.
Abstract: THE AUTHOR FIRST REVIEWS THE METHODS OF CULTIVATING AND PREPARING HASHISH. THE SUBCULTURE OF THE HASHISH DEALER IS THEN INVESTIGATED. THIS DISCUSSION IS STRUCTURED ALONG THE TYPICAL PATTERNS OF THE HASHISH DEALER'S CAREER: RECRUITMENT, MOBILITY, CAREER-RELATED KNOWLEDGE AND MYTHS, LIFESTYLES, AND CAREER TERMINATION. ALSO EXAMINED ARE THE PROFITS AND PRICES FOR HASHISH, AND THE MARKET STRUCTURE FOR HASHISH IN THE OTTAWA AREA. THE AUTHOR CONCLUDES THAT ONE CANNOT SPEAK OF A 'DRUG CULTURE' WHICH ENCOMPASSES THE SEVERAL POPULAR ILLICIT DRUGS AND THOSE WHO USE THEM SINCE THERE ARE DISTINCT SUBCULTURES DIVIDING THE DRUG-USING POPULATION ALONG THE LINES OF THE VARIOUS DRUGS TAKEN.
