Annotation: DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATION OF A ONE-WEEK 'DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL' RUN BY THE ST. PAUL (MN) POLICE DEPARTMENT TO ALLOW BOTH THE CANDIDATE AND THE DEPARTMENT TO TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT EACH OTHER PRIOR TO THE RECRUIT ACADEMY.
Abstract: PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS WHO HAVE PASSED A WRITTEN CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION, A PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION, PLUS A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, ARE ASKED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL AS THE FINAL TESTING PROCESS. TO THE CANDIDATE, THE SCHOOL IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A REALISTIC ONE-WEEK PREVIEW OF POLICE WORK. TO THE DEPARTMENT, THE SCHOOL GIVES AN OPPORTUNITY TO EVALUATE THE CANDIDATE. AT THE END OF THE WEEK, THE CANDIDATE AND THE DEPARTMENT CAN MAKE A MORE OBJECTIVE DECISION ABOUT WHETHER THEY ARE SUITED TO EACH OTHER. IF THE DECISION IS AFFIRMATIVE, THE CANDIDATE IS HIRED AND MOVES ON TO THE RECRUIT ACADEMY. EACH CANDIDATE IS COMPENSATED FOR ATTENDING THE WEEK-LONG SCHOOL AT BEGINNING PATROLMAN'S WAGES REGARDLESS OF WHETHER HE IS DROPPED, WITHDRAWS, OR SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETES THE COURSE....ELW
