ALMOST HALF WERE DUE TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, FOLLOWED IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE BY BLOWS FROM VARIOUS HEAVY OBJECTS, GUNSHOTS, AND KNIFE WOUNDS. ON THE AVERAGE, ONE DEATH (VIOLENT OR NON-VIOLENT) OCCURRED IN THE FEDERAL DISTRICT EVERY 2 HOURS AND 27 MINUTES AS COMPARED TO A NATIONAL AVERAGE OF ONCE EVERY HOUR AND 12 MINUTES. THE MAJORITY OF VIOLENT DEATHS TOOK PLACE MOST OFTEN ON THE WEEKEND AND THOSE DUE TO TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS, HEAVY OBJECTS, AND KNIVES AND OTHER SHARP INSTRUMENTS OCCURRED MORE FREQUENTLY DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR. DEATHS DUE TO GUNSHOT WOUNDS WERE GENERALLY EVENLY DISTRIBUTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, EXCEPT FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, WHICH REGISTERED A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE.
