Annotation: THIS SERIES OF PAPERS OFFERS BASIC PRINCIPLES FOR RESEARCH AND EVALUATION OF CORRECTIONS AND DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAMS AND EXAMINES THE WHARTON TRACT NARCOTICS TREATMENT PROGRAM AS AN EXAMPLE OF EVALUATION.
Abstract: SINCE CONTINUED FUNDING FOR MANY CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS NOW DEPENDS UPON EVALUATION EFFORTS, THIS BOOK WAS COMPILED TO PROVIDE BASIC INFORMATION FOR BOTH THE RESEARCHER UNFAMILIAR WITH CORRECTIONS AND DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT AND FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR UNFAMILIAR WITH EVALUATION TECHNIQUES. IT COVERS THE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS OF SUCH EVALUATION, THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION METHODOLOGY, APPLICATION OF THESE PRINCIPLES TO EITHER THE CORRECTIONS SITUATION OR THE DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT PROGRAM, AND THE REALITIES OF SUCH RESEARCH. THE THREE BASIC RESEARCH ISSUES ARE THE MANAGEMENT OF THE INFORMATION SYSTEM, EVALUATING THE OUTCOME OF THE PROGRAM, AND PREDICTING PAROLE OUTCOME. THE CONTINUING EVALUATION OF WHARTON TRACT NARCOTICS TREATMENT PROGRAM AT THE YOUTH RECEPTION AND CORRECTION CENTER, YARDVILLE, NEW JERSEY, WHICH BEGAN IN 1970, IS PRESENTED AS A STUDY IN THE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS ENCOUNTERED IN SUCH STUDIES.
