Annotation: THE REPORT PROVIDES INFORMATION TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS AND CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS ON TERRORISM IN THE PRISON CONTEXT.
Abstract: THE MANIFESTATION OF TERRORIST ACTIVITIES DIRECTED TOWARD AND FROM PRISONS IS NOT A NEW PHENOMENON. EVIDENCE SUBSTANTIATES THAT PRISONS ARE NOT ONLY PLACES WHERE GUERRILLAS AND TERRORISTS ARE SENT, BUT ALSO WHERE THEY ARE DEVELOPED. MANY LEFT-WING TERRORIST GROUPS CONSIDER PRISONS RACIST AND POLITICALLY OPPRESSIVE. THE REPORT BRIEFLY EXAMINES URBAN GUERRILLA WARFARE AND URBAN TERRORISM INCLUDING RURAL AND URBAN CONCEPTS, ARMED PROPAGANDA, AND TERRORISM. THE LINK BETWEEN URBAN TERRORISM AND PRISONS IS ESTABLISHED BY DISCUSSING INMATES AS POLITICAL PRISONERS AND INMATE CONNECTION WITH GUERRILLA AND TERRORIST GROUPS. IN CONCLUSION, THE REPORT CALLS ATTENTION TO THE ACTIVE EFFORT BY MANY GROUPS TO ORGANIZE THE PRISON INMATE POPULATION INTO A FACTION THAT PERCEIVES ITS MEMBERS AS BEING POLITICAL PRISONERS; IT IS NOTED THAT THE FINAL AIM OF THIS MOVEMENT IS MOST LIKELY ARMED TERRORISM, GUERILLA WARFARE, AND VIOLENT REVOLUTION. THE REPORT INCLUDES COPIES OF POSTERS AND A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
Index Term(s): Correctional institutions (adult); Inmate attitudes; Inmate organizations; Inmates; Political offenders; Victimization in prisons
