Abstract: DIFFERENT TYPES OF LOCKING DEVICES FOR DOORS, SLIDING GLASS DOORS, AND WINDOWS ARE DISCUSSED, AS WELL AS PROPER METHODS FOR ANSWERING DOORS AND HIDING DUPLICATE KEYS. MARKING VALUABLES WITH IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS AND REGISTERING THEM WITH THE POLICE IS RECOMMENDED. TECHNIQUES OF PROTECTING ONE'S HOME WHILE OUT OF TOWN INCLUDE NOTIFYING THE POLICE DEPARTMENT OF ONE'S ABSENCE, ASKING NEIGHBORS TO KEEP AN EYE ON THINGS, AND SETTING AN AUTOMATIC TIMER TO TURN ON LIGHTS AT VARIOUS TIMES. IT IS EMPHASIZED THAT ONE SHOULD NEVER ADVERTISE THAT THE HOUSE WILL BE EMPTY OR THAT ONE IS ALONE IN THE HOME. GUARD DOGS AND DOGS AS SIMPLE HOUSEPETS ARE ALSO SUGGESTED. PROCEDURES FOR THE PERSON TRAPPED INSIDE THE HOUSE WHEN SOMEONE BREAKS IN ARE DETAILED; ONE SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP AN INTRUDER AS POSSESSIONS ARE NOT WORTH A LIFE.
