Abstract: ALTHOUGH THERE IS A FEDERAL FRAMEWORK OF POLICE SERVICES IN WEST GERMANY, MOST POLICE FUNCTIONS ARE ADMINISTERED BY THE INTERIOR DEPARTMENTS OF INDIVIDUAL STATES, WITH MINIMAL INTERVENTION BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN A COORDINATING ROLE. A BRIEF HISTORY OF GERMAN POLICE PRACTICES BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THE WORLD WARS IS FOLLOWED BY DETAILED DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FEDERAL BORDER POLICE SERVICE, CUSTOMS POLICE SERVICE, PASSPORT CONTROL SERVICE, RAILWAY POLICE, AND CRIMINAL POLICE. THE FEDERAL CRIMINAL POLICE AGENCY COLLECTS AND EVALUATES CRIME-RELATED INFORMATION RELEVANT TO INTERSTATE CRIME, PROVIDES STATE AUTHORITIES WITH INFORMATION AND ADVISES THEM OF CONNECTIONS BETWEEN OFFENSES, AND MAINTAINS A CRIMINAL RECORD AND IDENTIFICATION SERVICE AND A FORENSIC LABORATORY. DESCRIPTIONS ARE PRESENTED OF THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE FEDERAL POLICE AGENCY'S DEPARTMENTS OF INTERIOR AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ITS CRIMINOLOGY INSTITUTE, AND ITS DEPARTMENTS OF IDENTIFICATION, CRIMINAL TECHNOLOGY, CENTRAL SEARCH, MODUS OPERANDI, AND SECURITY.
