Abstract: THE PRIVATE SECURITY GUARD MUST KNOW THE LIMITATIONS OF HIS POWERS, SO THAT HE WILL NOT BREAK THE LAW AND BE LIABLE TO A LAWSUIT. INVASION OF PRIVACY SUITS ARE NOT UNCOMMON AMONG SECURITY GUARDS WHO DO NOT HANDLE THEIR AUTHORITY PROPERLY. IT IS THE COMPANY'S RESPONSIBILITY TO INFORM THEIR GUARDS ABOUT WHAT THEIR LEGAL POWERS ARE. THEIR FUNCTION IS EMPLOYEE-ORIENTED, AS OPPOSED TO POLICE OFFICERS, WHOSE SERVICE IS CITIZEN-ORIENTED. THEY ARE TO PROTECT THE SAFETY OF THE EMPLOYEES AND THE GUESTS OF THE COMPANY, AND CAN, AT TIMES, ACT WITH DEPUTIZED POLICE POWERS. THE GUARDS HAVE THE POWER TO ARREST AS LONG AS IT IS DONE LAWFULLY AND THERE IS JUST CAUSE, BUT ONLY TO DETAIN A SUSPECT FOR THE POLICE. THE PRESENTATION PROVIDES SAMPLE SITUATIONS, GIVING TRAINEES A WIDE VARIETY OF SECURITY PROBLEMS TO SOLVE. (BAC)
