Annotation: PERSONAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PROBATIONERS ARE EXAMINED TO DETERMINE WHICH, IF ANY, WERE SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED TO SUCCESS OF FAILURE IN A VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION PROGRAM.
Abstract: THE SUBJECTS FOR THE STUDY WERE 256 PROBATION CLIENTS OF THE DALLAS AND FORT WORTH OFFICES OF THE TEXAS REHABILITATION COMMISSION BETWEEN JULY1,1968, AND JANUARY 15,1974. DATA ON 156 SUCCESSFUL AND 100 UNSUCCESSFUL CLIENTS WERE OBTAINED AND COMPARED ON THE BASIS OF AGE, SEX,MARITAL STATUS, NUMBER OF CHILDREN,EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, NUMBER OF MONTHS OF LONGEST PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT. AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP, NUMBER OF PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS, TYPE OF OFFENSE COMMITTED, INTELLIGENCE, AND RACE. THE DATA WERE TESTED FOR SIGNIFICANCE BY THE T-TEST FOR CERTAIN HYPOTHESES AND BY THE CHI-SQUARE TEST FOR OTHERS AN ALPHA LEVEL OF .05 WAS CONSIDERED MINIMUM LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE REJECTION OF ALL HYPOTHESES. NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND BETWEEN SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL PROBATIONERS ON THE BASIS OF OF AGE, SEX, MARITAL STATUS, NUMBER OF CHILDREN, AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP, TYPE OF OFFENSE COMMITTED, INTELLIGENCE, OR RACE. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND ON EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT LEVEL, NUMBER OF MONTHS OF LONGEST PREVIOUS EMPLOYMENT, AND NUMBER OF PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS. DATA FROM THE SIGNIFICANCE COMPARISON ARE INCLUDED, AND A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PROVIDED. (RCB)
