Annotation: THIS STUDY ATTEMPTS TO DETERMINE AND DESCRIBE THE DIFFERENCES, IF ANY, BETWEEN A GROUP OF ADULT FEMALE SEX OFFENDERS WHO VIOLATED PAROLE IN NEW JERSEY AND A COMPARABLE GROUP WHO ADJUSTED UNDER SUPERVISION.
Abstract: THE MAIN FOCUS WAS ON POSSIBLE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS WITH RESPECT TO THEIR MEDICAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL HISTORIES, THEIR PSYCHOMETRIC STATUS, THEIR EMOTIONAL AND RELATED PROBLEMS, AND THEIR SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS AND PAROLE EXPERIENCE. THE GROUP SELECTED FOR THE STUDY CONSISTED OF 50 VIOLATORS AND 50 ADJUSTEES WHO WERE PAROLED FROM THE NEW JERSEY REFORMATORY FOR WOMEN. THE CASES WERE ANALYZED STATISTICALLY FOR ALL FACTORS SUBJECT TO QUANTIFICATION AND WITH CASE STUDY TECHNIQUES FOR CONFIGURATIONS OF PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS. THE STATISTICAL AND CASE STUDY ANALYSES INDICATED THAT THE SIGNIFICANT FACTORS DURING THE POSTINSTITUTIONAL PERIOD WERE THOSE INVOLVING OFFICER-SUBJECT RELATIONSHIP, FEELINGS OF SECURITY IN THE SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND EMOTIONAL AREAS, AND SATISFACTORY EMOTIONAL TENOR IN THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS OF THE INDIVIDUAL PAROLE SITUATION. HOWEVER, THE STATISTICAL FINDINGS SHED NO LIGHT ON THE INDIVIDUAL, AND THE CASE STUDY FINDINGS DO NOT INDICATE, WITH ANY CERTAINTY, ANY DIFFERENCES IN THE PAROLE DATA, WHICH ARE SIGNIFICANTLY ASSOCIATED WITH OUTCOME. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT GREATER EMPHASIS BE PLACED ON THE USE OF PRESENTENCE TECHNIQUES FOR THE JUDICIARY, THAT THE FACILITIES OF THE NEW JERSEY DIAGNOSTIC CENTER BE EXTENDED TO INCLUDE ALL OFFENDERS, ESPECIALLY RECIDIVISTS, AND THAT THE TECHNIQUES OF GUIDED GROUP INTERACTION BE UTILIZED FOR PAROLED INDIVIDUALS. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES IN COLLECTING AND TREATING DATA ARE DETAILED, ALONG WITH THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS, CASE STUDIES OF VIOLATORS, CASE STUDIES OF ADJUSTEES, AND CASE STUDY ANALYSIS. THE HISTORY OF PAROLE IN NEW JERSEY IS ALSO REVIEWED. ASSORTED STATE PAROLE SERVICE FORMS AND MATERIALS ARE APPENDED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS INCLUDED. TABULAR DATA ARE PROVIDED. (KBL)
