Abstract: IN THE LIGHT OF INCREASING CRIME AND STABILIZED OR DECREASING EXPENDITURES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT BUDGETS, A PRINCIPAL AIM IN CRIME PREVENTION IN BRITAIN HAS BEEN TO ENCOURAGE THOSE IN INDUSTRY, COMMERCE, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO BECOME SELF-SUFFICIENT IN SECURITY MEASURES. A NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION COMMITTEE, COMPOSED OF SENIOR OFFICIALS FROM COMMERCE, INSURANCE, HOME OFFICE, POLICE SERVICE, AND SECURITY COMPANIES, STUDIES SPECIFIC CRIME PROBLEMS AND MAKES RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES IN SPECIFIC CRIME AREAS. IN ADDITION TO THIS NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION COMMITTEE, LOCAL COMMUNITIES HAVE CRIME PREVENTION PANELS CONSISTING OF BUSINESS PEOPLE, TEACHERS, AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY, WHO AIM TO STIMULATE IMPROVED SECURITY IN THE CONTEXT OF LOCAL CRIME PROBLEMS BY MAKING SUGGESTIONS TO RESIDENTS ABOUT CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES. FREQUENT CRIME PREVENTION CAMPAIGNS ARE INSTITUTED AT THE NATIONAL AND LOCAL LEVELS, UTILIZING TELEVISION, RADIO, AND THE PRESS. ASSOCIATIONS OF PRIVATE SECURITY FIRMS, INSURANCE COMPANIES, AND MARKETERS OF PRIVATE SECURITY EQUIPMENT ARE INCLUDED IN COOPERATIVE EFFORTS WITH POLICE TO DEVISE AND PROMULGATE UNIFORM CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES. IN ADDITION, METROPOLITAN POLICE ARE ORGANIZED TO GIVE CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE TO BUSINESS AND PRIVATE CITIZENS. IN THIS CONNECTION, A MOBILE CRIME PREVENTION VEHICLE, WHICH CIRCULATES IN AREAS PARTICULARLY PRONE TO BURGLARY AND CAR THEFT, SHOWS A RANGE OF SECURITY EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FOR MAKING HOMES AND CARS MORE SECURE. SPECIFIC CRIME PREVENTION ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 1974 ARE DESCRIBED. (RCB)
