Abstract: THE DIRECTORY CONTAINS THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROJECTS WHICH WERE DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE ABILITY OF THE POOR TO RECOGNIZE AND HANDLE THEIR LEGAL PROBLEMS. THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PROJECTS WERE OBTAINED FROM RESPONSES TO QUESTIONNAIRES. THE RESPONSES CONTAINED INFORMATION ON PAST PROJECTS, ONGOING PROJECTS, AND PROJECTS BEING DEVELOPED. THE DIRECTORY ALSO INCLUDES A CROSS-SECTION OF PROJECT PROPOSALS BEING CONSIDERED IN THE FIELD OF COMMUNITY EDUCATION BASED ON PRINTED PAMPHLETS DEVELOPED BY PROJECT PERSONNEL FOR PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION. SURVEY FINDINGS SHOW THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS USUALLY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT SUCH PROJECTS, BUT LOCAL BAR ASSOCIATIONS TEND TO GREET THEM WITH INDIFFERENCE. MOST OF THE PROJECTS REPORT THAT THEY SUFFER FROM POOR ATTENDANCE AND A LACK OF FUNDING. MOST PROJECTS LACK A SPECIFIC PHILOSOPHY CONCERNING THEIR REASONS FOR EXISTING, ALTHOUGH THEY STATE THAT THEY DO HAVE SUCH A PHILOSOPHY. A SAMPLE CLIENT SCREENING QUESTIONNAIRE IS PROVIDED OF THE TYPE USED BY THE LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF ROANOKE VALLEY TO ALERT CLIENTS TO LEGAL PROBLEMS AND TO FAMILIARIZE LEGAL SERVICES PERSONNEL WITH THE INDIVIDUAL CLIENTS. THE DIRECTORY ALSO INCLUDES THE TABLE OF CONTENTS AND THE INTRODUCTION TO A CITIZENS' GUIDE TO THE LAW WHICH WAS PRODUCED BY THE PIMA COUNTY LEGAL AID SOCIETY. THE GUIDE DISCUSSES A VARIETY OF LEGAL ISSUES INCLUDING ARREST PROCEDURES AND DEBTORS' RIGHTS. THE NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF PROJECT COORDINATORS ARE PROVIDED. (TWK)
