Abstract: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATERNAL NUTRITION AND HEALTH OF THE NEWBORN, BETWEEN EARLY CHILDHOOD NUTRITION AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT, BETWEEN FAMILY SIZE AND NUTRITIONAL LEVEL, AND BETWEEN NUTRITION AND LEARNING ABILITY ARE DISCUSSED. A HEALTHY FAMILY IS CONSIDERED A STABLE FAMILY, LESS LIKELY TO PRODUCE THE SOCIAL PROBLEMS WHICH LEAD TO CRIME. GOOD NUTRITION IS ESSENTIAL TO PREVENTION OF BRAIN DAMAGE LEADING TO LEARNING DISABILITIES AND, EVENTUALLY, TO JUVENILE DELINQUENCY. GOOD NUTRITION IS ALSO IMPORTANT IN THE TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ADDICTION. CONCERN IS EXPRESSED OVER DIETS ADMINISTERED IN INSTITUTIONS; A TYPICAL MENU FROM A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY IS EXAMINED AND CRITICIZED FOR ITS USE OF REFINED FLOUR, ITS HIGH SUGAR CONTENT, AND ITS USE OF CONVENIENCE FOODS. A GOOD DIET IS ESSENTIAL TO EMOTIONAL STABILITY AND REDUCED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HANDICAPS. A PLEA IS MADE FOR GOOD NUTRITION IN PRISONS. (GLR)
