Annotation: CONCEPTS UNDERLYING THE INTERPRETATION OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR AND THE PATTERNS OF RESPONSE TO IT BY DOMINANT SOCIAL GROUPS ARE EXAMINED, AND SPECIFIC DEVIANT BEHAVIOR IS ANALYZED.
Abstract: THE NATURE OF DEVIANCE, THE PROCESS BY WHICH CERTAIN BEHAVIOR BECOMES CLASSIFIED AS DEVIANT, THE DEVIANT'S SELF-IMAGE, DEVIANT STEREOTYPES, DEVIANCE AS INTERPRETED FROM THE INTERACTIONIST VIEWPOINT, DEVIANCE AND CRIME, AND THE ISSUES AND PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH LABELING DEVIANT BEHAVIOR ARE THE SUBJECTS DISCUSSED IN THE FIRST PART OF THE TEXT. THE SECOND AND FINAL PART OF THE PRESENTATION FOCUSES ON PARTICULAR ASPECTS OF BEHAVIOR. THE BEHAVIORS DISCUSSED INCLUDE: DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE; SEXUAL DEVIANCE IN GENERAL, AND FEMALE PROSTITUTION AND MALE AND FEMALE HOMOSEXUALITY IN PARTICULAR; VIOLENT BEHAVIOR; AND PROPERTY CRIMES. EACH OF THESE DEVIANT BEHAVIORS IS EXAMINED IN TERMS OF ITS FORMATIVE PROCESSES AND INTERACTION WITH THE NORMATIVE ATTITUDES AND LAWS TAUGHT AND STRUCTURED BY DOMINANT SOCIAL GROUPS.
