Abstract: BECAUSE CALIFORNIA HAS A VARIETY OF TRAFFIC SITUATIONS RANGING FROM TWO-LANE COUNTRY ROADS TO 3 FREEWAYS PATROLED BY HELICOPTER AND MONITORED BY CLOSED-CIRCUIT TELEVISION, THE ELEMENTS OF TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT IDENTIFIED IN THIS VOLUME ARE APPLICABLE TO ANY LOCALITY. A COMPREHENSIVE GLOSSARY OF WORDS AND PHRASES IS PROVIDED. THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS OF TRAFFIC LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE DISCUSSED: THE POLICE TRAFFIC CONTROL FUNCTION, PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES FOR TRAFFIC STOPS, ENFORCEMENT TACTICS AND SAFETY DURING TRAFFIC STOPS, HANDLING VIOLATORS DURING TRAFFIC STOPS, EXAMINING IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS, AUTOMOTIVE EQUIPMENT INSPECTION, APPREHENDING SPEED VIOLATORS, EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATION, RECOGNIZING COMMON DRIVING VIOLATIONS DURING PATROL, FELONY STOPS AND ROADBLOCKS, COURT TESTIMONY, AND INTOXICATED DRIVER DETECTION, ARREST, AND ARREST REPORT PROCEDURES.
