Annotation: ADEQUACY OF POLICE MANPOWER, THE TRAINING OF POLICE, QUALITY OF POLICE LEADERSHIP, MODERN POLICE EQUIPMENT, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, LAW AND COURT SUPPORT OF THE POLICE, AND OUTLOOK FOR POLICING ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract: IN DISCUSSING ADEQUACY OF POLICE MANPOWER IN FULFILLING THE MYRIAD RESPONSIBILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH SERVING AND PROTECTING THE PUBLIC, THE COOPERATION OF AUXILIARY SERVICES AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC IS EMPHASIZED. PARTICULAR COOPERATIVE PERSONNEL AND SERVICES ARE IDENTIFIED AND DISCUSSED, AND THE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROFESSIONAL POLICE OFFICER ARE DEFINED IN THIS CONTEXT. THE DISCUSSION OF POLICE TRAINING INCLUDES A CONSIDERATION OF ACADEMIC AND SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION OF POLICE OFFICERS, ON-THE-JOB TRAINING, AND RESTRAINTS IN THE USE OF POLICE FORCE. CURRENT DIFFICULTIES IN POLICE SUPERVISION ARE IDENTIFIED AND THE OPERATIONS OF FOUR CRIME INFORMATION CENTERS ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF THE QUALITY OF POLICE LEADERSHIP. THE USE OF MARINE SERVICES, TRAFFIC OFFENDER BOOTS (VEHICLE IMMOBILIZERS), BREATHALYSERS, VIDEOTAPE RECORDERS, VASCAR FOR SPEED LAW ENFORCEMENT, HIGHWAY EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS, CHEMICAL MACE, AND HELICOPTERS AND LIGHT PLANES ARE BRIEFLY CONSIDERED IN THE SECTION ON MODERN POLICE EQUIPMENT. THE DEVELOPMENT OF SKILLS IN PERSONAL RELATIONS IS DISCUSSED AS A CRITICAL FACTOR IN THE NURTURING AND MAINTENANCE OF EFFECTIVE POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. THE USE OF THESE SKILLS IN HANDLING STUDENT REVOLTS, RIOT CONTROL, ARRESTS, AND SCHOOL PROBLEMS IS DESCRIBED. CONFLICT OF LAWS AND COURT PROCEDURES AS THEY AFFECT POLICE ARE EXAMINED; AND THE FINAL SECTION OF THE BOOK PRESENTS A GENERAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE TREND IN POLICING. REVIEW QUESTIONS ARE PROVIDED AT THE END OF EACH CHAPTER, AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE INCLUDED.
