Annotation: STATUS REPORTS PROVIDE INFORMATION FROM A SURVEY OF SEVERAL WEST GERMAN SOCIAL THERAPEUTIC FACILITIES (STF'S) AND REPRESENT THE SITUTATION AT EACH FACILITY AS OF MARCH 1976.
Abstract: THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS WERE NOTED FOR EACH FACILITY: DEFINITION OF SOCIAL THERAPY; ADMISSION PROCEDURES AND CRITERIA; EXPERIENCE WITH THE SITE OF THE FACILITY; PERSONNEL AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE; EDUCATION AND TRAINING OF STAFF; THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS OBSTACLES TO THERAPY; WORK, TRAINING AND INSTRUCTIONS; CORRECTIONAL STRUCTURE, OPENNESS TO THE OUTSIDE, PREPARATION FOR RELEASE, AFTERCARE OPPORTUNTIES; EXISTENCE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS; SUPERVISION; CONTACT AND RELATIONS WITH REGULAR CORRECTIONS; AND COOPERATION BETWEEN INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL THERAPISTS. ALTHOUGH THERE WERE ORGANIZATION AND OTHER PROBLEMS AT ALL FACILITIES, ADVANCES WERE BEING MADE. BAD GANDERSHEIM STF, A TEST FACILITY, FOUND THAT ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE THE FACILITY FORM AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM. PROGRESS WAS MADE AT THE DUEREN SOCIAL THERAPEUTIC MODEL FACILITY WHEN THE NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN JUSTICE MINISTRY REQUIRED THAT CANDIDATES FOR REGULAR CORRECTIONAL POSITIONS SPEND SOME TIME WORKING IN THE DUEREN FACILITY AS PART OF THEIR TRAINING. BECAUSE LOWER SOCIAL CLASSES ARE SOMEWHAT OVERREPRESENTED AT THE ERLANGEN SOCIAL THERAPEUTIC RESEARCH AND TEST FACILITY, IT WAS SHOWN THAT THERAPY MUST BE STRONGLY ORIENTED TOWARD IMMEDIATE GOALS. THE GELSENKIRCHEN CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, AND THE LUDWIGSBURG AND LUDWIFSHAFEN STF'S ALL BASE THEIR WORK ON THE PRINCIPLE THAT BECAUSE DEVIANT BEHAVIOR IS THE RESULT OF FAULTY LEARNING PROCESSES CORRECTION OF THIS BEHAVIOR DEPENDS ON LEARNING TO RECOGNIZE IT AND THEN ACQUIRING NEW, SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR. DECISIONS REGARDING ADMISSION INTO THE HAMBURG-BERGENDORF SPECIAL FACILITY ARE COMPLICATED BY PRACTICAL LIMITATIONS ON SPACE, SO THAT THE COMMITTEE CONSIDERS NOT ONLY NEED, BUT ALSO THE CANDIDATE'S TREATMENT CAPACITY. AFTERCARE WAS FOUND TO BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF TREATMENT AT THE LUEBECK SOCIAL THERAPEUTIC DIVISION, WHICH WAS OPENED UP FOR WOMEN IN 1974. THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES FOR EACH FACILITY ARE REPORTED IN DETAIL. FOR AN ENGLISH SUMMARY TRANSLATION OF THIS DOCUMENT, SEE NCJ # 53170. --IN GERMAN. (MHP)
