Abstract: THE SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED BY THE COMPUTER SECTION OF THE HOME OFFICE CENTRAL RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT (HOCRE) TO HANDLE THE LARGE AMOUNT OF SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE DISSEMINATED TO UNITED KINGDOM OPERATIONAL FORESNIC SCIENCE LABORATORIES. THE AUTOMATED SEARCH BY COMPUTER OF INFORMATION FILES (ASCIF) PROGRAM PROVIDES A RAPID AND CONVENIENT METHOD FOR SUBJECT SEARCHING BUT IS SUITABLE FOR SEARCHING A SPECIFIC PAPER ON THE BASIS OF AUTHOR OR JOURNAL REFERENCE. THUS, FROM ACCESSION NUMBER 21000 ONWARDS, AN AUTHOR TITLE INDEX (ATI) WAS TO FACILITATE SEARCHING FOR AUTHORS, JOURNAL REFERENCES, OR WORDS IN THE TITLE. THE ATI HAS ALSO BEEN USED TO PREPARE A COMPUTER PRINTOUT OF EACH MONTH'S ACCESSIONS DIVIDED INTO 11 SECTIONS, EACH RELATING TO A MAJOR SUBJECT AREA IN FORENSIC SCIENCE. A MANUAL METHOD OF SEARCHING FOR SPECIFIC REFERENCES WAS PRODUCED IN NOVEMBER 1977 COVERING ACCESSION NUMBERS 21000 TO 26499. THE INDEXES PRESENTED HERE CONSTITUTE AN UPDATE (FOR MANUAL SEARCHING) SHOWING PAPERS ACCESSED ON TO THE HOCRE COMPUTER FROM NOVEMBER 1977 TO OCTOBER 1978 (ACCESSION NUMBERS 26500 TO 29500). A LIST OF INDEXING WORDS IS ACCOMPANIED BY A SUBJECT INDEX FROM LITTLE WORDS (OR KEYWORD OUT OF CONTEXT--KWOC), AN AUTHOR INDEX, A JOURNAL CITATION INDEX, AND A SECTION SHOWING THE FULL BIBLIOGRAPHIC CITATION FOR ALL 3,000 ACCESSIONS LISTED IN ORDER OF ACCESSION NUMBER. DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE INDEXES ARE INCLUDED. (MHP)
