Abstract: THE STUDY HYPOTHESIZES THAT THE LIKELIHOOD OF A COMMUNITY'S RESORT TO VIOLENCE IS A FUNCTION OF (1) THE EXISTENCE OF PRIOR SOCIAL DISLOCATIONS, AND (2) THE PRECIPITANT TO VIOLENCE BY THE COUNTERINSURGENT. AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRECONDITIONS OF VIOLENCE RESTS ON THE METHOD AND DEGREE OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SOCIAL CONTROL OVER THE POPULATION BY A NONNATIVE REGIME, THE EXISTENCE OF A CORE GROUP OF SOCIALLY DISAFFECTED PEOPLE, AND THE LACK OF OPTIONS OTHER THAN VIOLENCE. AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRECIPITANTS TO VIOLENCE RESTS ON THE PERCEPTIONS OF THE FRUSTRATED GROUP WHICH GUIDES THE COUNTERINSURGENT, THE STRATEGIC DOCTRINES THAT EMERGE FROM THOSE PERCEPTIONS, AND THE TACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF COUNTERINSURGENCY POLICY. THE STUDY ATTEMPTS TO UNCOVER A RELATIONSHIP AMONG THE OBJECTIVE SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF VARIOUS SEGMENTS IN THE PALESTINIAN COMMUNITY, THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF ISRAELI COUNTERINSURGENCY POLICY, AND THE SCOPE AND INTENSITY OF GUERRILLA VIOLENCE AGAINST ISRAEL. FINDINGS INDICATE THAT THE READINESS OF THE PALESTINIANS TO ENGAGE IN VIOLENCE AGAINST ISRAEL IS A FUNCTION OF THEIR GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION, SOCIOECONOMIC MILIEU, AND THE DEGREE OF COERCIVE FORCE EXERCISED AGAINST THEM. FOOTNOTES, TABULAR DATA, A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND CHARTS ARE INCLUDED. AN APPENDIX CONTAINS A GRAPH ON GUERRILLA INCIDENTS AND ISRAELI CASUALTIES FROM 1967-1970. (WJR)
