Abstract: 'UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE' IS DEFINED AS 'ARMED AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WAR WAGED BY A NATIVE OR FOREIGN INSURGENT GROUP, OPERATING WITHIN A COUNTRY OR WHOLLY OR PARTIALLY FROM FOREIGN BASES, WHICH UTILIZES SPEED AND CONCEALMENT AND RELIES HEAVILY ON BRAVERY, STAMINA, AND INGENUITY TO COMBAT AN ENEMY ENJOYING GREATER NUMBERS AND/OR SUPERIOR WEAPONS AND GENERAL TERRITORIAL AND POPULATION CONTROL.' UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE IS EMPLOYED BY THE ARMED MINORITY, A MINORITY POSSIBLY SUPPORTED CLANDESTINELY BY AN UNARMED MAJORITY UNDER THE POLICE CONTROL OF THE SUPERIOR MILITARY POWER. ONCE THE MINORITY GROWS STRONG ENOUGH TO CONFRONT GOVERNMENT FORCES IN FRONTAL COMBAT--THE 'THIRD STAGE' OF RURAL GUERRILLA WARFARE--THE WAR BECOMES LARGELY CONVENTIONAL. UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE CONSISTS OF GUERRILLA OPERATIONS IN RURAL AND URBAN AREAS. THE TACTICS ARE THE SAME REGARDLESS OF THE NATURE OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA. THE GUERRILLAS STRIKE SWIFTLY AND QUICKLY DISAPPEAR. IN MOST CASES, INSURGENTS FIGHT IN BOTH CITIES AND RURAL AREAS, WITH THE EMPHASIS ON EACH AREA BEING DETERMINED BY LOCAL CONDITIONS. UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE ALSO ENCOMPASSES ACTIVITIES PERIPHERAL TO COMBAT, SUCH AS PROPAGANDA DESIGNED TO GAIN ALLEGIANCE FROM THE POPULACE AND DISCREDIT THE ENEMY. (RCB)
