Abstract: IN AN ANALYSIS OF THE REVOLUTIONARY PROCESS, SEVERAL CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN: (1) REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE HAS BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE FEATURES; (2) THE RADICALISM OF THE REVOLUTIONARY LEADERSHIP OPPOSED TO THE STATE FREQUENTLY BECOMES REACTIONARY WHEN THOSE LEADERS THEMSELVES CONTROL THE STATE; (3) THE MOST CRUCIAL REVOLUTIONARY PROCESSES ARE ESSENTIALLY POLITICAL IN NATURE; AND (4) PROTEST AGAINST THE PREVAILING AUTHORITY IS THE COMMON DENOMINATOR OF ALL REVOLUTIONS. A COMPARISON OF THE AMERICAN, FRENCH, RUSSIAN, AND OTHER REVOLUTIONS PORTRAYS THE DIFFERENCES AND SIMILARITIES OF EACH. THE SELECTIONS ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE CATEGORIES: EUROPE, AMERICA (NORTH AND SOUTH), AND THE THIRD WORLD. WRITINGS OF EUROPEAN REVOLUTIONARIES INCLUDE THOSE OF MAXIMILIEN ROBESPIERRE, LOUIS KOSSUTH, GUISEPPE MAZZINI, GUISEPPE GARIBALDI, PIERRE PROUDHON, MIKHAIL BAKUNIN, AND KALR MARX. ALSO SELECTED ARE WRITINGS FROM LEO TOLSTOY, WILLIAN MORRIS, PETER KROPOTKIN, GEORGES SOREL, EMMELINE PANKHURST, LENIN, JAMES CONNOLLY, AND LEON TROTSKY. WRITINGS OF AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARIES ENCOMPASS THOSE OF THOMAS PAINE, THOMAS JEFFERSON, SIMON BOLIVAR, WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON, EUGENE V. DEBS, EMMA GOLDMAN, AND MALCOLM X. THE SELECTION ON THE THIRD WORLD COVERS THE WRITINGS OF APOLINARIO MABINI, MOHANDAS GANDHI, HO CHI MINH, MAO TSE-TUNG, FIDEL CASTRO, ERNESTO CHE GUEVARA, AND CAMILO TORRES. MOST OF THE ORIGINAL SPELLING AND PUNCTUATION HAVE BEEN RETAINED IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE STYLE OF THE ERA IN WHICH THESE WORKS WERE WRITTEN. (PRG)
