Annotation: THE POLITICAL HISTORY OF LIBERATION MOVEMENTS IN AFRICA IS STUDIED ALONG WITH GEOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS LEADING TO THE NATIONAL STRUGGLES.
Abstract: THE HISTORY OF AFRICAN RESISTANCE TO WHITE RULE IS TOLD IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL STRUGGLES, INCLUDING REFORMIST AND TERRORIST EFFORTS IN COUNTRIES THROUGHOUT AFRICA. EACH COUNTRY AND ORGANIZATION IS PRESENTED, PRECEDED BY BRIEF SUMMARIES OF BACKGROUND NECESSARY FOR UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEMPORARY PROBLEMS. POLITICAL HISTORY AND ANALYSIS FOLLOW. SETBACKS, DEFICIENCIES, AND THE FACTIONALISM IN THE VARIOUS LIBERATION MOVEMENTS ARE NOTED. THE BOOK IS CONCERNED WITH THE NATIONAL LIBERATION MOVEMENTS DIRECTED AGAINST COLONIAL AND OTHER DIRECT FORMS OF WHITE MINORITY RULE. THE IDEOLOGICAL INFLUENCES ON THE MOVEMENTS ARE A MIXTURE OF LANGUAGE AND IDEAS RANGING FROM 18TH CENTURY EUROPEAN AND NORTH AMERICAN BOURGEOIS THOUGHT TO THAT OF THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO. THE SPECIFIC GEOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS FOR EACH COUNTRY ARE GIVEN, AS WELL AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOVEMENTS UNTIL 1972. COUNTRIES STUDIED ARE SOUTH AFRICA (AZANIA) SOUTH WEST AFRICA (NAMIBIA), RHODESIA, ANGOLA, GUINE AND THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS, MOZAMBIQUE, SAO TOME E PRINCIPE, THE HORN OF AFRICA, AND SOME OF THE ISLANDS, INCLUDING THE CANARIES. A BIBLIOGRAPHY, INDEX, AND TABLES OF MAJOR LIBERATION MOVEMENTS AND AFRICAN CONFERENCES WHICH DISCUSSED LIBERATION QUESTIONS ARE INCLUDED. (RFC)
