Abstract: THE EMERGENCE OF ARAB NATIONALISM DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY IS DISCUSSED AS ARE THE DIVISIONS BETWEEN SECULAR AND RELIGIOUS NATIONALISTS, BETWEEN THOSE WHO PREFERRED AN INDEPENDENT STATE WITH STRONG TIES TO THE WESTERN CHRISTIAN WORLD, AND BETWEEN THOSE WHO ASPIRED TO A UNITED ARAB EMPIRE AND THOSE WHO PREFERRED INDEPENDENT ARAB STATES WITH AUTONOMY FOR EACH STATE, PARTICULARLY SYRIA. THE GROWTH OF PAN-ARAB NATIONALISM, WHICH PRECEDED PALESTINIAN NATIONALISM, WAS INFLUENCED BY THE WORK OF NEGUIB AZOURY IN 1905, THE OPPOSING NATIONALIST IDEOLOGIES OF THE NASHASHIBIS AND HUSSAINIS, AND THE POLICIES OF THE GRAND MUFTI OF JERUSALEM DURING THE 1922-48 PALESTINE MANDATE. THE BEGINNING OF PALESTINIAN NATIONALISM CAN BE DATED FROM AFTER THE 1948 WAR; AND THE SENSE OF NATIONALISM IS FOUND IN THE PUBLISHED WORKS THAT FOLLOWED, AND THAT SOUGHT TO FIND REASONS FOR THE ARAB DEFEAT. THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE EXODUS OF PALESTINIAN ARABS FROM ISRAEL, THE GROWTH OF GUERRILLA GROUPS AND THE FEDAYEEN, AND THE DIFFERING IDEOLOGIES OF THE PALESTINIAN ORGANIZATIONS CONCERNING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A DEMOCRATIC PALESTINIAN STATE AND THE RIGHTS OF ISRAEL.
