Annotation: REASONS FOR THE RECENT EMERGENCE OF PALESTINIAN NATIONALISM ARE EXPLORED AS WELL AS THE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL PROBLEMS POSED BY THE CREATION OF A PALESTINIAN STATE.
Abstract: THE GROWTH OF PALESTINIAN NATIONALISM, THE FORMULATION OF THE 1964 PALESTINIAN NATIONAL COVENANT, AND THE ROLE OF THE PALESTINE LIBERATION ORGANIZATION (PLO) ARE EXPLORED, ALONG WITH THE ROLES, TACTICS, AND GOALS OF THE OTHER PALESTINIAN TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS. DISCUSSIONS COVER KING HUSSEIN'S PROPOSAL FOR WEST BANK AUTONOMY FOLLOWING ITS REUNION WITH JORDAN, U.S. AND SOVIET VIEWS, AND THE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL PROBLEMS OF CREATING A VIABLE STATE CONSISTING OF MOST OF THE WEST BANK AND THE GAZA STRIP. PALESTINE ACTIVIST STATEMENTS ARE PRESENTED ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PALESTINIAN DEMOCRATIC STATE, THE CONTINUATION OF ARMED VIOLENCE AGAINST ISRAEL AND JORDAN, AND THE REJECTION OF UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION 242. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, FROM THE ISRAELI VIEWPOINT, THE PLO DOES NOT REPRESENT ALL PALESTINIANS, IS NOT UNITED, IS COMMITTED TO FORCE AND THE CONSEQUENT DESTRUCTION OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL, AND THAT THE CREATION OF A MINI-PALESTINE UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE PLO WOULD THREATEN ISRAEL'S EXISTENCE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR A REFUGEE CLAIMS CONFERENCE AND A PALESTINIAN NATIONAL CONFERENCE TO DEBATE PALESTINIAN AIMS AND POLICIES AND FOR AN ARAB 'LITTLE SUMMIT' MEETING TO CONSIDER PLANS LIKE THOSE OF KING HUSSEIN FOR A JORDANIAN-PALESTINIAN FEDERATION.
