Annotation: A DETAILED SURVEY OF TERRORIST ACTIVITY BY TYPE OF INCIDENT AND WORLD REGION BETWEEN JANUARY 1 AND MARCH 31, 1979 SHOWS A DRAMATIC INCREASE OVER 1978.
Abstract: TERRORIST ACTIVITIES WORLDWIDE NUMBERED 765 DURING THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF 1979, EXCEEDING ONE-HALF OF THE 1978 TOTAL AND PRODUCING SUBSTANTIAL DOLLAR LOSSES. THE REPORT, WHICH EXAMINES THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS BY TYPE AND WORLD LOCATION, INCLUDES INCIDENTS OF ASSASSINATION, KIDNAPPING, MAIMING, FACILITY ATTACKS, HIJACKING, AND BOMBING. IN RELATION TO BUSINESS AS A WHOLE, THE PERCENTAGE OF INCIDENTS TARGETING U.S. BUSINESS HAS DECLINED. EUROPE AND LATIN AMERICA CONTINUE TO LEAD OTHER REGIONS IN FREQUENCY OF TERRORIST ACTIVITY, WITH BOMBINGS USED MOST COMMONLY IN EUROPE AND FACILITY ATTACKS USED MOST OFTEN IN LATIN AMERICA. OTHER RESULTS OF TACTICAL AND COUNTRY ANALYSIS SHOW THAT KIDNAPPING IS MOST PREVALENT IN THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES OF SPAIN AND ITALY AND IN THE LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES OF NICARAGUA, COLOMBIA, AND EL SALVADOR. OF THE 283 TERRORIST BOMBING OPERATIONS DURING THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1979, 151 TOOK PLACE IN EUROPE, 76 IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA, AND 45 IN LATIN AMERICA. REPORTS ARE ALSO GIVEN ON FREQUENCY AND LOCATION OF MAIMING INCIDENTS; FREQUENCY AND LOCATION OF ASSASSINATIONS, TARGETS, AND GROUPS RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE ASSASSINATIONS; AND THE OUTLOOK FOR FUTURE TERRORIST ACTIVITY IN EUROPE, LATIN AMERICA, AND THE MIDDLE EAST. TABLES SUMMARIZING TERRORIST ACTIVITY BY TARGET AND LOCATION ARE INCLUDED. (RFC)
