Annotation: THE PERSPECTIVE OFFERED BY THIS VOLUME OF ESSAYS IS THAT REVOLUTION IS HERE TO STAY INDEFINITELY, AND THAT REVOLUTIONARY GUERRILLA WARFARE IS USEFUL AS A STRATEGY FOR THE WEAK, THE FRUSTRATED, AND THE ALIENATED.
Abstract: ESSAY SELECTION IS BASED PRIMARLY ON INTERPRETIVE QUALITY, CONCEPTUAL CLARITY, AND VARIETY OF APPROACH, AND INDIVIDUAL SUBJECTS, SUCH AS TERROR, AMBUSH, AND ASSASSINATION ARE TREATED AS CHARACTERISTICS OF REVOLUTIONARY GUERRILLA WARFARE. REVOLUTION, AS USED IN THIS VOLUME, REFERS PRIMARILY TO ARMED STRUGGLE AND VIOLENCE INTENDED TO BASICALLY CHANGE THE STRUCTURE, POLICIES, AND LEADERSHIP OF GOVERNMENT AND SOCIETY. AN INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER IDENTIFIES THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF REVOLUTION AND THE GUERRILLA WARFARE IT GENERATES, AND SUGGESTS AN EXPLANATORY FRAMEWORK THAT CONTAINS ANALYSIS RESULTS. SUBSEQUENT CHAPTERS INTRODUCE THEORIES OF REVOLUTION, PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS IN CIVIL VIOLENCE, AND A DISCUSSION OF THE J-CURVE OF RISING AND DECLINING SATISFACTIONS AS A CAUSAL FACTOR IN REVOLUTIONS AND REBELLION. ADDITIONAL SECTIONS DELINEATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF DOCTRINE IN REVOLUTIONARY GUERILLA WARFARE THROUGH PRESENTATION OF SELECTIONS FROM SUN TZU, CLAUSEWITZ, V.I. LENIN, AND MAO TSE-TUNG. A MACROVIEW OF THE CAUSES AND CONTEXTS OF MODERN REVOLUTIONARY GUERRILLA WARFARE IS PRESENTED WITH EMPHASIS ON INSURGENCY IN UNDERDEVELOPED SOCIETIES, PEASANT REBELLIONS, AND PATRON-CLIENT POLITICS AND CHANGE IN SOUTHEST ASIA. MICROVIEWS OF MODERN REVOLUTIONARY GUERRILLA WARFARE DISCUSS DOCTRINES OF CHE GUEVARA, THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY, POLITICAL MOBILIZATION IN GUINEA-BISSAU, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR MOZAMBIQUE. ADDITIONAL TOPICS INCLUDE URBAN GUERILLA WARFARE AND THE URBAN GUERRILLA MINIMANUAL BY CARLOS MARIGHELLA; SOME COUNTERINSURGENCY DILEMMAS; AND WARS OF NATIONAL LIBERATION. A FINAL CHAPTER PRESENTS SOURCES FOR THE STUDY OF REVOLUTIONARY WARFARE. EXTENSIVE NOTES AND TABULAR DATA ARE INCLUDED. (AOP)
