Annotation: THE PROJECT REPORT DEFINES AND DEVELOPS SEISMIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS TO BE USED IN THE PLANNING, DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND OPERATION OF POLICE AND FIRE STATIONS.
Abstract: SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE TO IDENTIFY PAST AND POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO POLICE AND FIRE FACILITIES AND THEIR OPERATIONS DURING EARTHQUAKE DISASTERS, IDENTIFY AND ASSESS PRESENT AND FUTURE FACILITY REQUIREMENTS AND EQUIPMENT NEEDS RELATIVE BOTH TO NORMAL AND DISASTER OPERATIONS, IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP SPECIFIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS AND ALTERNATIVES FOR MITIGATION OF EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE/FAILURE, AND DEVELOP SPECIFIC CONCEPTUAL SEISMIC DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR POLICE AND FIRE FACILITIES. THE TEXT EVALUATES POLICE AND FIRE STATIONS IN TERMS OF DISASTER OPERATIONS, SITE DESIGN, BUILDING FORM, FUNCTIONAL SPACE CRITERIA, NONSTRUCTURAL SYSTEMS AND COMPONENTS, EQUIPMENT, AND FUTURE TRENDS. DESIGN CHECKLISTS WITH ACCOMPANYING COMMENTARIES, DETAILED ILLUSTRATIONS, CHARTS, AND FLOORPLANS ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE EVALUATIONS. EMERGENCY OPERATING CENTERS (EOC'S) ARE DISCUSSED IN TERMS OF DEFINITIONS, PROGRAM FUNCTIONS, PROGRAM MODELS, AND ANALYSIS OF A FIRE STATION/POLICE STATION AS AN EOC. SEISMIC RENOVATION OF EXISTING FACILITIES AND CONSIDERATION OF SEISMIC DESIGN FEATURES AS PART OF A MULTIHAZARD DESIGN APPROACH ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. A COMPREHENSIVE REFERENCE LIST AND A FEEDBACK FORM ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
