Annotation: THIS ILLUSTRATED TRAINING MANUAL ON INTERVIEWING FOR A JOB IS DESIGNED FOR USE BY JAIL INMATES IN A PREEMPLOYMENT TRAINING PROGRAM AIMED AT INCREASING WORK-RELATED SOCIAL SKILLS.
Abstract: AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS A PART, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO USE THE JOB INTERVIEW TO OBTAIN A JOB. SPECIFIC TASKS INCLUDE PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEW, MAKING A GOOD IMPRESSION IN THE INTERVIEW, ANSWERING NEGATIVE QUESTIONS POSITIVELY AND WITH CONFIDENCE, PRESENTING SKILLS AND ABILITIES IN A POSITIVE WAY, SHOWING AN INTEREST IN THE COMPANY FROM WHICH A JOB IS SOUGHT, AND GETTING FEEDBACK FROM THE INTERVIEWER. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF UNIT LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USE OF THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS FOR PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEW, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT-TEST KEY, A JOB INTERVIEW DICTIONARY, AND A WORD LIST. THE MANUAL IS A PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILES AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS.
