Abstract: DATA CONCERN THE NUMBER AND CLASSIFICATION OF POLICE FORCE AND ANCILLARY STAFF, CRIMES AND OFFENSES RECORDED AND CLEARED BY THE POLICE, CASES AND RESULTS ACCORDING TO OFFENSE BEFORE MAGISTRATES' AND JUDGES' AND COURTS, CASES TRIED BEFORE JUDGES' COURTS, AND CHILDREN APPEARING BEFORE CHILDREN'S COURTS BY AGE AND SEX AND BY OFFENSE. OTHER TABLES REFLECT THE NUMBERS OF CONVICTED OFFENDERS SENT TO PRISON BY AGE AND SEX (1974/1975 TO 1976/1977), AND 'DISTINCT' PERSONS SENT TO PRISON BY AGE AND PREVIOUS IMPRISONMENTS, SIZE OF FAMILY, MARITAL STATUS, PLACE OF BIRTH AND HIGHEST LEVEL OF SCHOOLING ATTENDED. ALSO, DATA REVEAL THE NUMBERS OF CONVICTED OFFENDERS IN PRISON BY OFFENSE COMMITTED AND AGE, TIME LAPSE SINCE LAST IMPRISONMENT, AND LENGTH OF SENTENCE. PRISON STATISTICS REFER TO THOSE PRISONERS HELD OR ADMITTED IN TASMANIA'S MAIN PRISON AT RISDON AND A JAIL FARM AT HAYES. (WJR)
