Abstract: ARCHITECTS MUST TAKE ENERGY CONSERVATION MEASURES INTO CONSIDERATION AS THEY DESIGN OFFICE BUILDINGS FOR THE FUTURE. THE GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION (GSA) HAS PUBLISHED GUIDELINES FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION DESIGN IN OFFICE BUILDINGS AS STIMULI FOR ENERGY-CONSCIOUS DESIGN. THESE GUIDELINES ACKNOWLEDGE THE ENTIRE BUILDING MUST BE CONSIDERED AS A WHOLE WITH AN INTERACTION AMONG THE STRUCTURE, MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, AND THE USERS IMPORTANT TO ENERGY USE. A CHART IS PRESENTED THAT SHOWS THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS THAT AFFECT A BUILDING'S DESIGN, COST, AND ENERGY USE. THE CHART SHOWS WHICH ITEMS IN DESIGN HAVE A DIRECT OR INDIRECT EFFECT ON ENERGY CONSERVATION. IN ADDITION, IT INDICATES THE MAGNITUDE OF ENERGY USED BY EACH DESIGN ITEM. FURTHER, THE ENERGY CONSERVATION POTENTIAL COLUMN, SHOWS HOW MUCH ENERGY CAN, POTENTIALLY, BE SAVED. A CHECKLIST OF ENERGY CONSERVATION OPPORTUNITIES RANKED IN PRIORITY ACCORDING TO CLIMATIC CONDITIONS IS ALSO GIVEN. THE CHECKLIST WAS APPENDED TO THE GSA GUIDELINES AND INCLUDES ITEMS THAT SUBSUME OTHERS. NUMEROUS GUIDELINES ARE GIVEN FOR FIVE AREAS OF CONSIDERATION. THESE ARE SITE, BUILDING, PLANNING, VENTILATION AND INFILTRATION, HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING, AND LIGHTING AND POWER. INFORMATION ON HOW TO OBTAIN THE COMPLETE GSA 'ENERGY CONSERVATION DESIGN GUIDELINE FOR OFFICE BUILDINGS' AND ITS AMENDMENTS IS GIVEN.
