Abstract: ANALYSIS OF KHAKI-COLLAR CRIME IS DRAWN FROM STUDIES OF MILITARY CRIME FROM MANY NATIONS AND ERAS. A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR EXAMINING MILITARY CRIME IS ACCOMPANIED BY A CLASSIFICATION OF TYPE--CRIMES AGAINST PROPERTY, CRIMES AGAINST PERSONS, AND CRIMES AGAINST PERFORMANCE (A CONCEPT NOT PREVIOUSLY INCORPORATED INTO ANY FORMAL FRAMEWORK OF CRIMINAL DEVIANCE). A CLASSIFICATION BY CONTEXT--INTRAOCCUPATIONAL, EXTRAOCCUPATIONAL (I.E., INVOLVING CIVILIANS), AND INTEROCCUPATIONAL (INVOLVING ENEMY SOLDIERS) ALSO IS PRESENTED. THIS ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK ILLUMINATES CHARACTERISTIC FORMS OF KHAKI-COLLAR CRIME. THE FORMS ARE THEN ILLUSTRATED WITH EXAMPLES FROM DIFFERENT NATIONS AND PERIODS AND INCLUDE MALINGERING, DERELICTION OF DUTY, MUTINY, FRATERNIZATION WITH ENEMY CIVILIANS, COWARDICE, DESERTION, 'CONDUCT UNBECOMING TO AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN,' 'FRAGGING,' AND BLACK MARKETEERING. FINALLY, INDICATIONS OF CHANGE IN THE MILITARY WITH THE ADVENT OF WOMEN OFFICERS AND AS A REFLECTION OF OTHER SOCIETAL CHANGES ARE EXPLORED. REFERENCES AND NAME AND SUBJECT INDEXES ARE PROVIDED.
