Annotation: THE ORGANIZATION, PROGRAMS, AND FINANCES OF THE SEARCH GROUP, INC. (SGI), AN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO THE PROMOTION OF TECHNOLOGY EFFECTIVE USE TO BENEFIT CRIMINAL JUSTICE, ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract: AN OVERVIEW OF THE MEMBERSHIP QUALIFICATIONS, STAFF TASKS, AND PERSONNEL POLICIES IS PRESENTED. PROGRAMS DISCUSSED INCLUDE THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM, THE CRIMINAL HISTORY PROGRAM, THE SECURITY AND PRIVACY PROGRAM, THE COURTS PROGRAM, THE NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROGRAM, THE STATE CORRECTIONS INFORMATION SYSTEM PROGRAM, THE CRIME REPORTING PROGRAM, AND THE STANDING COMMITTEE PROGRAM. MANY OF SGI'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE ATTRIBUTABLE TO PROVIDING SERVICES DIRECTLY TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES. THE NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS RENDERED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO 91 AGENCIES IN 34 STATES. CLEARINGHOUSE WORKSHOPS WERE HELD IN 9 CITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WHERE 356 JUSTICE PRACTITIONERS DISCUSSED TOPICS RANGING FROM SYSTEM TRANSFER TO PROCUREMENT OF EQUIPMENT. SIMILAR TO THE OFFENDER-BASED STATE CORRECTIONS INFORMATION SYSTEM, WHICH NOW INCLUDES 35 PARTICIPATING STATES, THE STATE CORRECTIONS RESOURCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IS DEVELOPING NUMEROUS ADMINISTRATIVE OR MANAGEMENT MODULES. MOREOVER, SGI REPORTS CONTINUE TO BE POPULAR, WITH 3,797 INDIVIDUAL REQUESTS FOR DOCUMENTS RECEIVED IN 1978-1979. THE FOURTH SEARCH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, WHICH REPRESENTED SGI AND LEAA'S 10-YEAR INVOLVEMENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE TECHNOLOGY, WAS ALSO SUCCESSFULLY HELD DURING THE YEAR. SGI ACCOUNTING POLICIES ARE SUMMARIZED. PHOTOGRAPHS, A STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL CONDITION, CHARTS, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND NAMES OF MEMBERS ARE INCLUDED. (WJR)
