Abstract: ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT OBJECTIVES OF POLYGRAPHY IS TO DETERMINE THE EXACT MANNER IN WHICH AN INDIVIDUAL WILL RESPOND TO TELLING A LIE. IN SPECIFIC-ISSUE POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION, IT IS NECESSARY TO USE A DIAGNOSTIC TEST PROCEDURE TO MEASURE THE MANNER AND ABILITY OF THE SUBJECT TO RESPONSE TO A LIE. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF A CONTROLLED NUMBER STIMULATION TEST ON THE POLYGRAPH SUBJECT IS TWOFOLD. IT ALLAYS FEARS, SUSPICIONS, AND UNEASINESS OF TRUTHFUL SUBJECTS BY GRAPHICALLY DEMONSTRATING THAT THE POLYGRAPH INSTRUMENT IS CAPABLE OF RECORDING DECEPTION AT A SPECIFIC LOCATION ON THE POLYGRAPH CHART AND THAT THE EXAMINER HAS THE EXPERTISE TO DISTINGUISH THE POINT AT WHICH THE DECEPTIVE RESPONSE OCCURS. IN ADDITION, THE EXAMINER HAS THE ABILITY TO DETERMINE WHERE DECEPTION OCCURS ON THE CHART, AND THE SUBJECT KNOWS HE OR SHE HAS PRODUCED A DECEPTION PATTERN WHICH WILL BE USED TO DIAGNOSE AND SEEK OUT OTHER DECEPTIVE RESPONSES. IF THE CONTROLLED NUMBER STIMULATION TEST IS PROPERLY APPLIED, IT GIVES THE TRUTHFUL POLYGRAPH SUBJECT CONFIDENCE IN THE POLYGRAPH INSTRUMENT'S VALIDITY AND THE EXAMINER'S EXPERTISE. A METHOD FOR PRESENTING THE CONTROLLED NUMBER STIMULATION TEST IS DETAILED, AND THE PSYCHOLOGICAL THEORY BASE OF THE TEST IS EXAMINED. (DEP)
